Discipleship Night 1: Hydrate

Two years ago, my husband and I led discipleship nights for interested college baseball players, and we’ve been feeling the call to start that ministry again. Throughout this process, I have been inspired and encouraged by Hillsong’s “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)”. (I included the video in this post.)

The first time around, we didn’t have as much focus as we needed to be successful. This year we decided to make a focus for the year: Hydrate. We were inspired by Called to Coach by John Crosby and by this verse:

“On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.’ By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.” –John 7:37-39

Just as athletes need to hydrate in order to perform their best (especially in the desert), we need to hydrate spiritually in order to perform our best. That is our vision for this discipleship group. We want for our players of faith who are away from home to have a place to go and be encouraged. We can only do so much, and it is up to them to carry it away into their lives, but our hope is that it will provide some spiritual nourishment for those who crave it. (We are of course also providing physical nourishment in the form of a home-cooked meal.)

Our first discipleship night was yesterday, and I’m happy to report it went smoothly. We had 13 players attend this one, and they all seemed eager to be a part of what we’re starting. Guys expressed a desire to pray together, share struggles, and even find a local church to attend together. We are excited to walk with them through this year and grateful to be called to this ministry. The responsibility is weighty, so we will be leaning on the Lord at every step.
